Keeping a Journal: One of the Three Treasures to Leave Behind

I love keeping journals. Whenever I'm home for vacation I always take time to read my stashed treasures. I can't help but laugh at the way I used to think, feel and see things. It's really worth keeping. It reminds me of how my thoughts metamorphosed into matured and great thoughts. Sharing to you Jim Rohn's tips on how to leave treasures for the next generation to come. Be blessed!

If you’re serious about becoming a wealthy, powerful, sophisticated, healthy, influential, cultured and unique individual, keep a journal. Don’t trust your memory. When you listen to something valuable, write it down. When you come across something important, write it down.

I used to take notes on pieces of paper and torn-off corners and backs of old envelopes. I wrote ideas on restaurant placemats. On long sheets, narrow sheets and little sheets and pieces of paper thrown in a drawer. Then I found out that the best way to organize those ideas is to keep a journal. I’ve been keeping these journals since the age of 25. The discipline makes up a valuable part of my learning, and the journals are a valuable part of my library.

I am a buyer of blank books. Kids find it interesting that I would buy a blank book. They say, “Twenty-six dollars for a blank book! Why would you pay that?” The reason I pay 26 dollars is to challenge myself to find something worth 26 dollars to put in there. All my journals are private, but if you ever got a hold of one of them, you wouldn’t have to look very far to discover it is worth more than 26 dollars.

I must admit, if you got a glimpse of my journals, you’d have to say that I am a serious student. I’m not just committed to my craft; I’m committed to life, committed to learning new concepts and skills. I want to see what I can do with seed, soil, sunshine and rain to turn them into the building blocks of a productive life.

Keeping a journal is so important. I call it one of the three treasures to leave behind for the next generation. In fact, future generations will find these three treasures far more valuable than your furniture.

The first treasure is your pictures. Take a lot of pictures. Don’t be lazy in capturing the event. How long does it take to capture the event? A fraction of a second. How long does it take to miss the event? A fraction of a second. So don’t miss the pictures. When you’re gone, they’ll keep the memories alive.

The second treasure is your library. This is the library that taught you, that instructed you, that helped you defend your ideals. It helped you develop a philosophy. It helped you become wealthy, powerful, healthy, sophisticated, and unique. It may have helped you conquer some disease. It may have helped you conquer poverty. It may have caused you to walk away from the ghetto. Your library—the books that instructed you, fed your mind and fed your soul—is one of the greatest gifts you can leave behind.

The third treasure is your journals: the ideas that you picked up, the information that you meticulously gathered. But of the three, journal writing is one of the greatest indications that you’re a serious student. Taking pictures, that is pretty easy. Buying a book at a book store, that’s pretty easy. It is a little more challenging to be a student of your own life, your own future, your own destiny. Take the time to keep notes and to keep a journal. You’ll be so glad you did. What a treasure to leave behind when you go. What a treasure to enjoy today!

Feast of Sto. Niño

Jesus gives importance to the children by setting them as examples. But aren’t the children sources of irritation because of their persistent questioning? Are not their cries, tantrums and rowdiness the cause of so many headaches for their parents and elders? We can enumerate a lot more reasons questioning the choice of the Lord Jesus, but the fact remains that He did refer to the children as the greatest in God’s Kingdom (Matthew 18:2). Maybe the complaints we have against children are acceptable to the Lord at their age. But in the Gospel today, Jesus refers more to their dependence, simplicity and humility.

The concern of the Lord is our salvation. If we are to belong to His Kingdom, we have to know our place before the Lord and have complete faith in Him. It is for this reason that Jesus took the children as models. In the same way that children are dependent on their parents for sustenance and formation, we must also be the same with God. Children recognize their place before their parents, and so must we. Children know that they came from their parents and therefore their parents know better than them. God created us and we should recognize that God knows what is best for us.

Jesus Himself was the best example. Though He was God, He willingly fulfilled His role as a child of Mary and Joseph. As an ordinary child, He was born of a mother, lived with His parents, helped them, visited the temple, etc. The Gospel writer and Apostle Luke saw Him growing in wisdom and strength. He did not remain a “niño” forever, though. He grew up, preached, worked miracles, suffered and died obeying His Father. He was a perfect Son to His Father. He showed the way to salvation.

Today’s feast not only recognizes the humanity of the Lord Jesus. It also reminds us that we can achieve salvation with our humanity. We should also grow in wisdom and strength. We should continue to imbibe the dependence we have on our parents and use it in relating with God.

Let us be childlike but not childish! Fr. Benny Tuazon

Reflection Question:

Do I relate with God the Father as a child?

Father, remind me always that I am Your child and I should relate to you as such. But let me grow, too, in wisdom and strength as Jesus did.

Box Full of Kisses

How could I ever forget this day? It's a friend's birthday. A friend who used to be special. I didn't greet him and some friends asked why. Well sometimes some friendships are not designed to last forever. But I do hope he still remember this beautiful story that I put inside an empty box full of kisses. Hmmmm sweet memories of friendship we thought would never last.

The story goes that some time ago, a man punished his 3-year-old daughter for wasting a roll of gold wrapping paper. Money was tight. He became infuriated when the child tried to decorate a box to put under the Christmas tree.

Never the less, the little girl brought the gift to her father the next morning and said, "This is for you, Daddy."

He was embarrassed by his earlier overreaction, but his anger flared again when he found the box was empty. He yelled at her, "Don't you know when you give someone a present, there's supposed to be something inside it?"

The little girl looked up at him with tears in her eyes and said, "Oh, Daddy, it's not empty, I blew kisses into the box. All for you, Daddy."

The father was crushed. He put his arms around his little girl, and he begged for her forgiveness. It is told that the man kept that gold box by his bed for years and whenever he was discouraged, he would take out an imaginary kiss and remember the love of the child who had put it there.

In a very real sense, each of us have been given a gold container filled with unconditional love and kisses from our children, friends, family or God. There is no more precious possession anyone could hold.

Well whether this friend remembers or not it doesn't matter anymore. That box full of kisses we gave him was a symbol of a pure friendship from Glory, Kobe and me. He said he left this box in Manila maybe it's long lost and forgotten but this story will live forever.

God bless!!!

The Pencil and the Eraser

Pencil: I’m sorry

Eraser: For what? You didn’t do anything wrong.

Pencil: I’m sorry because you get hurt because of me. Whenever I made a mistake, you’re always there to erase it. But as you make my mistakes vanish, you lose a part of yourself. You get smaller and smaller each time.

Eraser: That’s true. But I don’t really mind. You see, I was made to do this. I was made to help you whenever you do something wrong. Even though one day, I know I’ll be gone and you’ll replace me with a new one, I’m actually happy with my job. So please, stop worrying. I hate seeing you sad.

I found this conversation between the pencil and the eraser very inspirational. Parents are like the eraser whereas their children are the pencil. They’re always there for their children, cleaning up their mistakes. Sometimes along the way, they get hurt, and become smaller / older, and eventually pass on. Though their children will eventually find someone new (spouse), but parents are still happy with what they do for their children, and will always hate seeing their precious ones worrying, or sad. All my life, I’ve been the pencil. And it pains me to see the eraser that is my parents getting smaller and smaller each day. For I know that one day, all that I’m left with would be eraser shavings and memories of what I used to have.

Moral: We never know the love of our parents for us till we have become parents.
